Having brought light to the city once at death’s doorstep, our time in Zeolite came to a close.

We packed up the vans with our gear and finished getting ready to depart. When we were about to embark, a crowd of people—Mr. Kabeer and Anik leading the pack—came to see us off. Everyone went around, shaking hands with the city folk gathered there and making their farewells.

Anik came to say good-bye.

“Thank you so much. I’ll never forget the time I spent with you two.”

“You look after yourself, Anik.”

“I want to be a great mage just like you someday.”

“Like me? A haughty, stuck-up witch?”

“That part, not so much…”

“Hey now!”

Anik and I burst into laughter. This was our last time goofing around with each other.

I went to pet his head but froze.

“Come to think of it… Isn’t it rude to use this hand?”

“It’s fine if it’s nothing major.”

Anik took my hand and plopped it down, and I gently stroked his hair.

His black locks were soft, his facial features were strong, and he had surprisingly clear skin. All too late, I noticed how greatly our features differed, though we were both just people.

“Anik, do you remember the secret to magic that I taught you?”

“Absolutely.”

Anik tapped his chest.

“I’ve gotta put my heart into it.”

“Perfect. That’s the most important thing.”

Then Xiaoyu patted me on the shoulder.

“Meg, we’re leaving soon. Go fetch the luggage.”

“Roger that!”

When I got my things, Xiaoyu came to stand beside me.

“Did you notice you’ve stopped calling me ‘teacher’s pet’?”

“It’s just too much of a mouthful. ‘Meg’ is much simpler.” She turned her back to me in a huff, scratching her head bashfully. “And…I don’t think of you that way anymore.”

“Huh? Louder, please?”

“I didn’t say anything!”

Anik laughed and enjoyed the show we put on—Xiaoyu in a snit and me smirking.
